Trial against four terrorists begins in Denmark

Brisbane News.Net Friday 13th April, 2012

COPENHAGEN - A Danish court Friday began trial against four suspected terrorists for scheming a strike to target the country's crown prince as part of a revenge attack against Denmark after a newspaper printed caricatures of Prophet Mohammed, the holiest figure of Muslims around the world.

Prosecutors said the four men three Swedish citizens and a Tunisian residing in Sweden were arrested hours before Crown Prince Frederik was to attend a function at Politiken newspaper in Copenhagen.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges of terrorism and illegal possession of weapons. If found guilty, the alleged terrorists could face life sentences.

The Jyllands-Posten newspaper carried 12 cartoons of the Prophet in 2005, triggering riots in Muslim countries that resulted in many deaths. Images of the prophet and other holy figures of Islam are prohibited and regarded as insulting to them. The newspaper later apologised.

Three of the four men Munir Awad, Omar Abdallah Aboelazm and Munir Ben Mohamed Dhahri, a Tunisian citizen were arrested in December 2010 at a flat near the Danish capital

Prosecutors alleged that they were on their way to Copenhagen to carry out the planned attack. Sabhi Ben Mohamed Zalouti was arrested a day later in Sweden. He was then extradited back to Denmark.

On the first day of the trial, prosecutor Henrik Plaehn said the four men were linked to Pakistan and had intended to cause havoc and kill as many people as possible in a "Mumbai-style attack" in India blamed on Pakistani militants.
