Google ordered to give access to YouTube
Brisbane News.Net Friday 4th July, 2008
Google has been ordered to allow entertainment giant, Viacom, access to details of the video-watching habits of visitors the YouTube website.
Viacom had asked the US courts to allow it to view the data as potential evidence for a billion-dollar copyright suit against YouTube and Google.
Viacom has charged that YouTube does not try to prevent Internet users from putting clips of Viacom's copyrighted television programs its site.
Google has expressed disappointment at the order but says it has, a least, mamaged to prevent Viacom from gaining access to secret source code used in YouTube video searches and access to the videos in private YouTube files.
The Viacom lawsuit has been merged with a similar civil action being pursued by the England's Football Association, which says soccer game clips are routinely posted on YouTube without permission.
